HOW DO FOODS AFFECT US?

Food contains three basic substances: carbohydrate, protein and lipid [fats]. Insulin is needed for them to metabolise, particularly in the case of carbohydrates. So insulin usage is closely related to the consumption of carbohydrate and blood sugar levels are thereby affected.

Fluctuating insulin levels not only are a problem in diabetes but also contribute greatly to depressive states and fatigue. Many diet regimes have lead to the loss of fat and muscle and may induce a decline in metabolic function showing as mild hypothyroidism.

High protein diets often used for weight reduction may lead to a continual craving for carbohydrate foods because of low brain serotonin levels induced. These diets are not often well tolerated as the kidneys will usually be under stress.

Low brain serotonin can lead to depression. Vegetable protein is easiest on the body. Vegetarians, unless they monitor closely their food combinations to ensure adequate inclusion of the essential amino acids, may very likely become tired.

Supplementation with Vitamin B12 and folic acid could be needed. Free-range or ‘hormone-free’ chicken and red meats are available which may lower exposure to chemicals and antibiotics. Fish from the cleanest parts of the ocean can be a good food resource.
