ALLERGIES - Knowing Your Body

It is wise to have some knowledge of our bodies and the foods it needs. Unfortunately what may for some persons appear to be good food may in fact cause many problems to others. Well-informed health professionals know that dairy products [cow’s milk, cheese, butter, yoghurt] and wheat along with other gluten-containing grains ie barley, oats, rye, spelt, kamut do in some persons cause many problems.

Those reacting to some of these foods may have damage to the villi in the digestive system causing pain and other digestive problems. Although removing wheat and milk products from the patient’s diet may be a start, there may be a number of other food problems found often including yeast that need to be addressed. The imbalance caused to enzymatic activity and vitamin absorption by the irritation from unsuitable foods can along with an imbalance in the ratio of carbohydrates to protein foods in the diet contribute to emotional disturbance and be involved in a host of other health imbalances.

Persons with candida overgrowth would be advised to steer clear of most fruits and restrict carbohydrates til their problems have cleared. Those with problems with dairy products often use almond or rice milks in particular and ensure they have adequate calcium from their range of foods in the diet and in some cases supplement with the appropriate calcium depending on the acid/alkali balance of their gut. Oils, cold-pressed, ie olive, safflower and of importance, flaxseed oils could be included in salad dressings or on their own. Water, purified, is an often-overlooked point but extremely important as the body is made of around 70% water. In general drinking 2-3 litres a day may be appropriate.

Food sensitivities come about through stress on the body’s system and often run through families. Food problems are not always easy to identify as the body ‘masks’ the irritation and it may show as a minor or major gut problems, snuffly nose, asthma, skin problems, irritation on the urinary system or mental/emotional problems. We are a chemical factory and the foods we put in our mouth all have a chemical reaction. The colour of foods is indicative of some of the chemical componentry but there are many other factors involved. Testing for food sensitivities will enable a better idea of those foods that are potential problem causers in individuals.
